Warner Bros. and filmmaker Baz Luhrmann are reportedly in early negotiations with Isla Johnston to portray the iconic title role in Jehanne d’Arc, Luhrmann’s upcoming historical epic. Johnston is best known for her breakout performance in The Queen’s Gambit, where she played the younger version of Beth Harmon, a role later taken on by Anya Taylor-Joy.
Luhrmann, who co-wrote the screenplay with playwright Ava Pickett, recently held an intimate first reading of the script at the Chateau Marmont the same location where Warner Bros. once hosted the inaugural reading of Rebel Without a Cause. The session, attended by studio executives from production, marketing, and publicity, featured a visual presentation by Luhrmann’s long-time design collaborator, Catherine Martin.
According to industry sources, Johnston has received the offer, positioning her for a potentially career-defining performance. She is represented in the UK by The Artists Partnership and in the US by UTA. Warner Bros. has declined to comment on the casting discussions.
